business advice for toxic employees

As the owner or senior manager of a growing company, you know how important it is to create and maintain a work environment where your employees actually want to work.

If your people are happy and exhibit positive attitudes, it becomes contagious and everyone wants to do better and help the company grow.

Negative people have the exact opposite effect.  They can actually create a toxic work environment that is detrimental to the health of your business

This eventually destroys any hope of creating teamwork where everyone is working for the common good.  Traction Inc offers a simple, complete, business management system to identify toxic people and take the necessary corrective action to keep all your employees working together to grow your business.

Who are the toxic people?

As always, the first part of fixing a problem, is realizing who or what the problem is in the first place. Here are a few of the common characteristics of toxic people:

  • Big egos
  • Rude behavior towards others
  • Know-it-alls
  • Narcissistic (It’s all about them)
  • Idea stealers
  • Passive-aggressive tendencies
  • Plain old aggressive behavior towards management

It starts at the top

Employees replicate what they see you and your management team do during the work day even after work. You can’t just talk the talk, you need to walk the walk and demonstrate a positive outlook all day, every day.  Make sure that you have your core values in place and demonstrate how much you believe in them to your employees.

Hold people accountable

To create a nontoxic work environment, you must hold people accountable to their wrong-doings and bad behavior. Develop and implement a formal policy and include accountability in your employee handbook.

If someone displays inappropriate behavior, address it immediately. Provide stern written warnings with an opportunity for the person to correct their behavior within a specified timeframe. If the guidelines are not met, you are well within your rights to terminate employees who exhibit improper behavior.

Conclusion

Toxic behavior can do irreparable harm to your organization and you owe it to yourself and your employees to develop and implement the policies that allow you to terminate employees who are working against you.
